When There Aren’t Black-and-White Answers
Sometimes, our industry gives us clear-cut guidelines.
Other times… we’re navigating shades of gray.
You might be reviewing a new student intake form with a rare diagnosis, or working with a rider whose presentation doesn’t align with what you expected. The question becomes:
“Can I safely and effectively serve this rider in my program?”
In adaptive/therapeutic riding, some conditions come with well-established precautions and contraindications. Others don’t. And even when guidance exists, it doesn’t always reflect the unique complexities of the student, horse, environment, or program.
That’s where your role as a thinking instructor becomes essential.
In this class, we’ll walk through how to apply clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and structured analysis when the situation falls outside black-and-white rules. You’ll learn how to build a safe, effective lesson approach using what we do know—diagnosis details, functional observations, professional recommendations, and your own instructional scope.
- Using a real student from my own program with a rare genetic condition, I’ll guide you step-by-step through how I:
- Interpreted and synthesized available medical and functional information
- Referenced industry-recognized precautions and contraindications
- Evaluated risk vs. benefit within the context of my program and training
- Selected tack and horse pairings tailored to that student’s needs
- Collaborated with the student’s family and support professionals
- Adapted our approach as the student progressed over time
You’ll walk away with a practical, decision-making framework you can apply the next time you face a diagnosis that’s unfamiliar—or doesn’t come with ready-made answers.
