An immersive learning retreat for instructors who want more than surface-level education

This isn’t just another clinic and way to earn continuing education. It’s a transformational learning experience unlike anything you’ve attended as an adaptive/therapeutic riding instructor.

Over four immersive days you’ll dive deep into high-level instruction theory, evidence-based teaching methods, and hands-on application that will expand the way you see both horses and students… and challenge you to see how much further you can take them.

Expect to be pushed outside your comfort zone. You’ll be challenged to think differently, to refine your instructor eye, and to connect the dots between horsemanship, biomechanics, and teaching theory. You’ll not only deepen what you teach, but also strengthen your how and why behind everything you ask your students and horses to do.

You’ll spend your days moving between classroom discussion, mock-horse practice, and mounted application on actual horses… thinking deeply, asking better questions, and collaborating with other instructors who care about safety, horse welfare, and high-quality instruction.

Expect to be mentally engaged, physically involved, and professionally refreshed.

Four days. One barn. One arena…..Surrounded by fellow instructors who care deeply about doing this work well.

The Value of Two Lead Instructors

This clinic is co-led by Saebra Pipoly and Dionne Newton — two experienced adaptive/therapeutic riding instructors who bring different, complementary lenses to every topic covered.

Having two lead instructors in the room fundamentally changes the learning experience:

  • More individualized attention during hands-on, mock-horse, and mounted work — no waiting around for feedback
  • Two expert perspectives on every discussion, scenario, and question you bring
  • Richer, more dimensional conversations — see how two experienced instructors approach the same challenge, often from different but equally valid angles
  • Greater depth on complex topics because we can tag-team explanations, demonstrations, and Q&A
  • Built-in coverage for small-group breakouts, so you’re never parked waiting for help
  • The unique opportunity to learn from the dynamic between two instructors who share a deep commitment to horse welfare, student safety, and high-quality teaching

(Lunches are working lunches, so educational value continues right through the middle of the day.)

  • Fly in Tuesday, November 3 — one of the cheapest domestic travel days of the week
  • Fly home Saturday afternoon, November 7 — also one of the cheapest fare days AND saves a hotel night vs. a Sunday departure (often $175–$350 in combined savings)

Daily Schedule

  • Wednesday, November 4: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Thursday, November 5: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Friday, November 6: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM + Networking Dinner (included)
  • Saturday, November 7: 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM (book flights home for 3 PM or later)

What You’ll Learn

This clinic blends evidence-based teaching, horsemanship, biomechanics, and real-world application in a progressive, layered format.

Evidence-Based Teaching & Instructional Decision-Making

  • Zone of Proximal Development and student progression
  • Stages of learning / stages of competence as an instructional framework
  • The task-analysis trap: teaching more with fewer words
  • Effective cues (internal vs. external), specific praise, and better questions
  • Engagement, independence, and realistic progression
  • Interleaving, varied practice, and lesson planning
  • Creating “thinking students,” not dependent riders

Disabilities, Precautions, and Instructor Judgment

  • Common diagnoses seen in adaptive riding — in depth
  • Precautions and contraindications: finding, interpreting, and applying them
  • Hypotonia, hypertonia, and mixed tone — how they actually show up in lessons
  • Tone changes during effort, fatigue, stress, and instability
  • Teaching to what you see in the moment, not just what’s on paper
  • Applying disability knowledge mounted and unmounted

Horsemanship, Horse Welfare, and Handling

  • Safe, effective haltering, grooming, leading, and tack fitting
  • Handler and instructor body language: theory and application
  • Timing of cues from the ground
  • Empathy for the lesson horse: what are we really asking?
  • Workload, balance, and welfare from the horse’s perspective

Riding Instruction & Biomechanics

  • Unmounted skill builders for posture, alignment, seat, leg, and rein aids
  • Teaching seat, balance, steering, two-point, posting, and rein management
  • Stirrup and rein length: purpose, outcomes, and common errors
  • Desired outcomes of common skills — and how to get students there
  • Transitions, rider influence, and biomechanics on horseback
  • Longe lessons, trot progression, posting mechanics, and quiet hands

Mounting & Dismounting

  • Unmounted skill builders to build safe mounting and dismounting
  • Supported and independent mounts and dismounts
  • Supported and independent emergency dismounts and safety procedures
  • Positioning and communication during mounting

Lesson Planning & Program Sustainability

  • Lesson planning that drives progression without instructor burnout
  • 2-up / 2-down method for mixed-ability groups in real time
  • Reverse-engineering lesson planning method and application
  • Time-saving documentation that improves safety and progression
  • Professional judgment, boundaries, and proactive behavior management
  • Clear communication with students, parents, caregivers, and volunteers

Games & Activities With Purpose

  • Using games intentionally — not as filler
  • Layering challenges across weeks
  • Supporting progression, independence, and transfer of skills
  • Leave with 3 months of progression-focused lesson plans

Beyond the Arena

This clinic also addresses the realities instructors face every day:

  • Safety and risk awareness
  • Ethical decision-making
  • Staying in your professional lane
  • Instructor wellness and longevity
  • Sustainable lesson structures that protect instructors and horses
