Teaching & Progressing Two-Point Position — Live Demonstration on Arty the Equicizer

Teaching strategies and exercises to progress adaptive/therapeutic riding students

Date: Tuesday, June 30, 2026 Time: 4:00–5:30 PM Pacific | 5:00–6:30 PM Mountain | 6:00–7:30 PM Central | 7:00–8:30 PM Eastern Location: Live on Zoom | Interactive Class + Live Q&A + Replay Access

Class Overview

Two-point is one of the most foundational skills we can teach in adaptive/therapeutic riding — and one of the most underused. A solid, well-progressed two-point position builds the balance, core engagement, and confidence that every other riding skill is going to lean on, from independent dismounts to introducing trot and beyond. The earlier we can introduce this skill, the more it accelerates everything that comes after it.

In this 90-minute class, we’ll walk through the what, why, and how of two-point position and how to teach and progress it across students with different physical, cognitive, emotional, and learning needs. We’ll cover what a true, functional two-point looks like, why it matters as a foundation skill, and how to introduce it in a way that meets the student where they actually are — then build it up safely and progressively.

Like the June 11 free Confident Seat class, this session uses live demonstration on Arty the Equicizer, which lets us isolate and clearly show each position, exercise, and correction. Everything demonstrated is designed to transfer directly into mounted lessons on live horses, so you’ll leave with strategies you can use in your very next lesson.

What We’ll Cover

We’ll move through two-point position from first introduction to confident progression and importance of dynamic practice within this position, including:

  • The what — what a functional, balanced two-point actually looks like (and troubleshooting the common struggles our students face within this skill)
  • The why — why two-point is a foundation skill for balance, confidence, independent dismounts, and the introduction of trot
  • The how — practical teaching strategies and exercises for introducing two-point at the halt, walk, and working walk
  • Adapting for different needs — how to modify instruction, cueing, and progression for students with physical, cognitive, emotional, and learning differences
  • Progressing the skill — how to build duration, stability, and independence over time without losing the foundation
  • Coaching support persons — how to direct sidewalkers and assistants to help without taking over, so students can build genuine independence
  • Connecting two-point to bigger skills — how a strong two-point sets students up for more independent dismounts, the introduction of trot, jumping position basics, and confident transitions

Live demonstration on Arty lets us slow each position and exercise down, show it clearly, and then talk through how to translate it into the mounted lesson on your actual program horses.

This 90-Minute Live Class Will Help You:

  • Teach two-point as a foundation skill rather than an “advanced” skill held back for later
  • Introduce two-point earlier with students of varying ability levels, so it can start supporting balance and confidence right away
  • Identify the difference between a true, functional two-point and a position that only looks close
  • Adapt your teaching for students with physical, cognitive, emotional, and learning differences without watering down the skill
  • Progress students safely from halt to walk to working walk while keeping the foundation intact
  • Coach sidewalkers and support persons to assist without doing the work for the student
  • Use two-point to build toward bigger milestones — more independent dismounts, the introduction of trot, and improved overall balance and confidence
  • Build a repeatable teaching framework you can apply across riders of different ages, abilities, and goals
  • Improve student confidence and independence by giving them a position they can own and progress in over time
  • Increase lesson value by layering two-point work into existing lessons without lengthening them
