Struggles Loading in the Mounting Area: Finding the Root of the Problem (and Fixing It!)

Diagnose the true cause behind mounting-area struggles and apply solutions that actually work.

A practical, horse-centered approach to safer, smoother mounting-area loads.

Time: 4:30–6:00 PM Pacific | 5:30–7:00 PM Mountain | 6:30–7:00 PM Central | 7:30–9:00 PM Eastern

Live on Zoom | Interactive Class + Live Q&A + Replay Access

Mounting areas are one of the highest-risk zones in an adaptive/therapeutic riding lesson—and yet many horse “loading” struggles in this space are misdiagnosed, overcorrected, or blamed on the horse’s attitude or training.

In this 90-minute class, we’ll break down common loading struggles when horses are asked to enter the mounting area or ramp, using real-world video examples to slow the moment down and analyze what’s actually happening.

Instead of asking “Why won’t this horse load?” we’ll focus on:

  • What information the horse is receiving
  • What the handler and environment are communicating (intentionally or not)
  • Why the horse’s response makes sense
  • How small changes dramatically improve safety, flow, and horse confidence

You’ll leave with a clearer framework for identifying root causes and implementing practical, horse-centered solutions that protect both horses and riders.

What We’ll Be Looking At

During the class, we’ll review short video clips highlighting top problem patterns commonly seen when horses are brought into mounting areas, including:

  • Hesitation, planting, or bracing
  • Rushing, crowding, or loss of straightness
  • Avoidance behaviors that escalate over time
  • Inconsistent responses depending on handler or setup

Each example will be broken down using a consistent analysis lens:

  • What’s actually causing the behavior
  • What outcome it creates for safety, flow, and horse welfare
  • What needs to change—and why it works

A sample video demonstrating a recommended lead-in to the mounting area will also be provided and discussed step-by-step.

This 90-Minute Live Class Will Help You:

  • Identify the real root cause of mounting-area loading struggles instead of repeatedly fixing symptoms
  • Read horse responses more accurately in the mounting zone and understand why the behavior is occurring
  • Recognize handler, environment, and setup factors that unintentionally create hesitation, rushing, or resistance
  • Reduce safety risks during one of the highest-risk moments of a mounted lesson
  • Create clearer, more consistent lead-ins to the mounting area that horses can understand and repeat
  • Improve consistency across handlers, reducing “this horse only does it with certain people” situations
  • Make small, practical adjustments that lead to immediate improvement without adding equipment or force
  • Protect horse confidence and longevity by addressing confusion early instead of allowing patterns to escalate
  • Develop a repeatable decision-making framework you can apply to any mounting-area challenge, not just the examples shown
  • Increase lesson flow and efficiency, leading to calmer mounts and smoother transitions into mounted work
