Matching horses and riders in adaptive/therapeutic lessons is rarely perfect… and that’s completely okay. What matters most is being able to see the pieces that make up that specific pairing — the horse’s build, the rider’s build, the way each one influences the other—and then knowing how to step in as the instructor to set them both up for success.

In this class, I’ll be walking you through my Horse & Rider Matching Matrix. It’s a simple but powerful way to break down the puzzle of equine and human biomechanics so you can start connecting the “why” behind what you see in the arena so you can give your student the “hows” of what they need to be succesfull. You’ll walk away with tools to help you spot the patterns, anticipate challenges, and make adjustments that support both your student and your horse.

What You’ll Learn

• How different horse factors—like wide vs. narrow build, smooth vs. bouncy movement, or uphill vs. downhill balance—affect what the rider feels and how they respond

• How rider traits—like muscle tone, torso length, and leg length—can influence what the horse feels underneath them

• What you might see when the match isn’t ideal (because that happens a lot!) and how to adapt in the moment

• Ways to layer in support before frustration builds, so you and your student don’t feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up

• Why a “good enough” match can still be a great lesson when you approach it with intention and a clear plan

This isn’t about hunting for the perfect pair—it’s about learning to read the cause-and-effect between horse and rider so you can step in with the right support at the right time. When you know what’s likely to pop up ahead of time, you can prepare your student, protect your horse, and build an environment where both can succeed.
