Understanding the Stages of Learning in Adaptive Riding
Date: Wednesday, January 28th, 2026
Time: 4:00 PM Pacific | 7:00 PM Eastern
Location: Live on Zoom | Interactive Class + Live Q&A
Class Overview
In adaptive riding programs, we work with students, volunteers, and instructors who are all learning at different rates, in different ways, and often at different stages at the same time. When we misidentify where someone is in their learning process, we unintentionally create mismatched expectations, breakdowns in communication, and safety gaps.
This class is grounded in the Four Stages of Competence, a well-established learning model that explains how skills move from unawareness, to effortful practice, to reliable performance, and eventually to automatic use. While the model is often discussed in professional training settings, it shows up constantly in adaptive riding lessons, volunteer roles, and instructor development—whether we name it or not.
In this session, we’ll translate the Four Stages of Competence into real, observable behaviors you see in the arena and around the barn. You’ll learn how each stage presents in students, volunteers, and instructors, and how adjusting your teaching, support, and expectations to match the learning stage leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.
This is a foundational framework that supports clearer teaching, stronger programs, and safer, more sustainable instruction.
